About Kate McClenaghen
Kate’s paintings explore form, structure, colour and texture with the intention of reflecting her physical, emotional and psychological experience of a place. Her aim is to engage the viewer through constructing fragments of the urban environment as visually and textually immersive scenes, conveying the experience of moving through a space, while allowing the viewer’s own narratives of walking in the city to emerge as they experience the work.
Kate is a painter and mixed media artist who grew up in Wrexham, North Wales. Her work explores the nonlinear nature of how we absorb the experience of a place and how this might present itself through the process of painting, conveyed through the push and pull or material engagement with the visual world. The urban landscape forms a physical and psychological space that she navigates through the action of painting, focusing on the inanimate, derelict, unnoticed and the not yet fully formed within the city. She uses the 'found paintings' she finds on walls and in public spaces in South East London, extracting layers of pattern, text, textures and gestural qualities to inform her own paintings.
Kate is concerned with the idea of the transitional surface, the material and ethnographic traces of where people have been, and how this might find parallels in the changing surface of a painting.
Kate has a MA in Painting at The Royal College of Art, and a BA at The Glasgow School of Art. Other works from this artist
