About Rona Slevin Ceramics
Rona's love of clay and ceramics started at secondary school where her art teachers were very encouraging and enthusiastic, even allowing her to use the art department in the lunch breaks. She studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1979-83 gaining a degree in Art & Design/Ceramics.
Throughout her working life she always kept up some kind of art practice including glasswork and painting, returning to ceramics in 2010. She had a long career in Social Work and Mental Health, retiring in December 2022 and now enjoys having more time to make and experiment in her home studio with her own kilns.
Rona draws inspiration from a variety of sources, mainly from time spent in nature, with camera in hand, to capture images and source material. Most of her ceramics pieces are made using hand building techniques, with slabs and coils of clay and a variety of tools to improve the form and create textures. The pieces are firstly bisque fired in the electric kiln and then glaze fired in either the electric or raku kiln.
