Matilda Sandground, Cairn 2, signed limited print, approx 22 x 29, £210

Matilda Sandground is a mixed media artist based on the East Coast of Scotland. A recent graduate of DJCAD, she holds a degree in Printed Textiles (2020) and a Fine Art Drawing Masters (2023). Her contemporary practice combines collage, drawing, and sculpture to explore ecological themes and our connection to nature.

Inspired by the Scottish landscape, she collects materials from local coastlines and forests, immersing herself in the textures, colours, and forms of the natural world. Drawing plays a central role in her evolving artwork, helping to translate these surroundings into unique imagery.

A key symbol in Matilda’s work is the Cairn, a traditional marker representing stability, grounding, and balance. Through the Cairn, she explores the interconnectedness of all things and the fragility of our relationship with nature. Her art invites viewers to reflect on the mindful benefits of the environment, offering a sense of harmony and peace in our increasingly precarious world. In this way, Matilda’s practice not only captures the essence of nature but also calls for a deeper appreciation and care towards the ecology we are all a part of.
