Maddie Webb, Transcendence, Oil on wood, 30cm x 30cm unframed £

Maddie likes to work with a variety of materials to create landscapes and imagery
inspired by the natural world that strikes a balance between abstraction and
representation. The dynamic energy seen in the paintings are often Maddie’s response
to observed changes in the landscape; ‘the movement of the sea, the merging of sea
with land and air, advancing rain or mist, ever changing light – all elements that seem
to be about something intangible.’

Maddie’s paintings are a synthesis of spaces, emotions, sensations experienced and
imagined. Mood, colour, and atmosphere fascinate her. Her paintings hinge on just-
aboutness; liminal and perceptible shapes: just-about states of mind that swing
between figurative, non-figurative, almost suggested elements that are altered by each
other.

Maddie’s artistic style is suggestive of the intensity of abstract expressionism,
gestural mark making is used instinctively, her work becomes its own story and has its
own energy. Layers of transparent glaze are built to create a depth of field that
replicates the luminosity of peripheral layers of consciousness. Fluctuating areas of
colour and bodies of paint are expanded and foregrounded, displaying a freedom of
movement. Ambiguity invites the viewer to speculate, to create meaning playfully,
offering a counterpoint to disappearing, and of simultaneously becoming hyper-visible.
